Many thanks to my dear friend Peggy, for this awesome guest post:
A Moment In Time
Time stands still for a moment. As I walk through the Vanderbilt family home, things are as they were a century ago. I envision the characters acting out a scene in each room……fancy gowns, tuxedos, cigars….boisterous talk from the men….stolen glances. It is as if time is frozen. All of the latest technology (walk in freezers cooled with blocks of ice, an indoor pool) and fashion from years gone by. I think of the Titanic deep under the sea; another moment from the same era, frozen in time. What a treat, to step into a day in the lives of these people, so influential in their time.
I am struck by the lasting quality and timeless beauty of everything on display. From sculptures to woodwork; from art to an immense library; from innovative architecture to modern conveniences; no expense was spared and the talent displayed is breathtaking and commands respect.
What will people say a century from now if given a chance to glimpse our “moment in time”?
Our time will not resonate with the same quality. Things are so cheap – fast – disposable – in our moment. Everyone living in a virtual world.
Where is the depth? The craftsmanship? The respect of quality? The willingness to invest? Is there anything of value?
100 years from now they will look back at this moment and there will be no art, no literature, no family structure, no evidence we did anything worthwhile. They will see silent televisions, computers, and cell phones that have long since lost their charge. Silent screens unable to reveal the things that seemed so important to us in 2011.
My trip to Biltmore made me long for the past – a simpler time where things were real and life was slower. I think that’s why I have taken up knitting.
Peggy’s words certainly make me pause and reflect on the legacy that we are leaving behind. I was wanting to include a verse of scripture with her post — but I was struck by the words that my daughter was singing for an upcoming musical at church. I just seems to fit:
Find us Faithful
May all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave,
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
May all who come behind us find us faithful.
After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find.
What legacy are your hoping to leave for your children? Leave a comment and let us know!
