Many thanks to my dear friend Peggy, for this awesome guest post:

A Moment In Time

Time stands still for a moment.  As I walk through the Vanderbilt family home, things are as they were a century ago.  I envision the characters acting out a scene in each room……fancy gowns, tuxedos, cigars….boisterous talk from  the men….stolen glances.  It is as if time is frozen.  All of the latest technology (walk in freezers cooled with blocks of ice, an indoor pool) and fashion from years gone by.  I think of the Titanic deep under the sea; another moment from the same era, frozen in time.  What a treat, to step into a day in the lives of these people, so influential in their time.

I am struck by the lasting quality and timeless beauty of everything on display.  From sculptures to woodwork; from art to an immense library; from innovative architecture to modern conveniences; no expense was spared and the talent displayed is breathtaking and commands respect.

What will people say a century from now if given a chance to glimpse our “moment in time”?

Our time will not resonate with the same quality.  Things are so cheap – fast – disposable – in our moment.  Everyone living in a virtual world.

Where is the depth? The craftsmanship? The respect of quality? The willingness to invest? Is there anything of value?

100 years from now they will look back at this moment and there will be no art, no literature, no family structure, no evidence we did anything worthwhile.  They will see silent televisions, computers, and cell phones that have long since lost their charge.  Silent screens unable to reveal the things that seemed so important to us in 2011.

My trip to Biltmore made me long for the past – a simpler time where things were real and life was slower.  I think that’s why I have taken up knitting.

Peggy’s words certainly make me pause and reflect on the legacy that we are leaving behind.  I was wanting to include a verse of scripture with her post — but I was struck by the words that my daughter was singing for an upcoming musical at church.  I just seems to fit:

Find us Faithful

May all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave,
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey

May all who come behind us find us faithful.

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find.

What legacy are your hoping to leave for your children?  Leave a comment and let us know!

Happy Thanksgiving!

by Robin on November 24, 2010

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the people” — 1 Chronicles 16:8

I just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m taking a few days off to spend with friends and family, but  I’ll be back posting on Friday or Saturday — ready to round up deals for the busy Christmas season!

Psalm 46:10

by Robin on November 5, 2010

Psalm 46:10 – “Be still and know that I am God”

Is anyone else needing this verse today?

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve realized how easy it is to let the demands of this world have control over our schedules and our lives.   We juggle so many roles in the course of just one day.  I’m learning that if I don’t start my day with my focus on my Creator, then I can so easily let my priorites slip out of line.  Before I know it- I feel just like a hamster on a wheel — chasing my list of “to-do’s” and accomplishing very little in the process.

God is showing me day by day how important it is to spend time in His presence first.  That has got to be my top priority.  When I begin by seeking  His will and His guidance, I know that He will set the priorities of my life (and my day) and equip me to handle each one.

Be a Blessing – Declan’s Journey

by Robin on September 16, 2010

Erin @ Coupon Cravings shared with me this week her efforts to raise funds to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and in particular to support the Carmichael family to help defray medical costs from their son, Declan’s battle with cancer.  This family has just recently lost Declan after a 6 month cancer battle, yet they continue to  work so hard to raise awareness and funds for Pediatric Cancer research (read their story – Declan’s Journey Here).

How can you help??

See Erin’s Post Here. When you shop through her links for Alice.com, Diapers.com, Groupon and Soap.com a portion of your purchase will go to support this very worthwhile cause.

Above all — please remember this family in your prayers.

Today is the Start of a Journey

by Robin on July 5, 2010

Some of you might remember that I posted a few weeks ago about a group forming over at Mom’s Toolbox to read the Bible in 90 days.  While you can certainly use any Bible, I found that in The Bible in 90 Days version it works out to be just 12 pages per day.
I love my current Bible dearly, but it is a study Bible full of neat footnotes and reference materials, but all  that information makes it a bit “thick” and therefore a little intimidating to think of reading it through in 90 days.
So anyway… today is Day 1 and I have finished the reading assignment.  I’m so encouraged and happy to be part of a group of nearly 400 women reading God’s Word.
It is not too late to join in.  (And please don’t feel that you need any specific Bible to do it)…just hop over to Mom’s Toolbox and get all the details.
Join us on this amazing journey through God’s Word.
“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”
- Psalm 119:105

Thought for the Day

by Robin on June 17, 2010

Daily Prayer:
So far today, God,
I’ve done all right …
I haven’t gossipped.
I haven’t been grumpy, nasty or selfish.
I’m really glad of that,
but in a few minutes, God
I’m going to get out of bed.
From now on, I’m probably going to need a lot of help!
(thank you, Debbie Alsdorf @ Design4Living)
